Back in 2010, I had the pleasure of doing a load of gigs with the wonderful Randa Khamis before she headed back to Australia to work on her second album with The Bamboos’ main man Lance Ferguson. The album is now hear, and certainly worth the wait.

Randa & The Soul Kingdom are back – with producer Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos, Cookin On 3 Burners, Lanu, Black Feeling) at the controls.

The buzz on Randa And The Soul Kingdom began after the self titled debut album resulted in a full European tour with label mates Deep Street Soul, a live session for Mark Lamarr on BBC Radio 2. Randa was lauded as a modern day equivalent to Marva Whitney, Ann Sexton and Vicki Anderson in their prime by Mojo Magazine, Blues & Soul and Randa’s music even featuring in the US version of teen TV show Skins.

Instead of flying straight back to Australia after the tour, Randa spent 6 months residing in London, collaborating with lik-minded funk & soul artists to write her second album. Inspired and influenced by the music and musicians in London, this second album What You Need was born. Finally back in Melbourne, Australia she went straight into The Shed Studios where the songs were recorded and produced by Lance Ferguson and John Castle (Megan Washington) once again at the controls.

To help promote the new album, Randa has put together a short mix of her own tracks (new and old) plus some of her inspirations too.

This 7″ single has a cumbia disco banger on one side and a midtempo Colombian headnodder on the flip. Both of which I’ve enjoyed spinning at some of my more recent nights to a more than well-received crowd.

Breakin Bread take another steer in the direction of the Latin diaspora to follow up the success of the DJ Zeph Batidas Latinas releases that were the sound of the summer in 2010. This time around the Breakin Bread crew head from Cali, via Birmingham to join forces with London based DJ and producer, Chris Read.

Side A – DISCO CUMBIA
‘Disco Cumbia’ is disco tempo cut of Latin flavour to get the crowd going. Effortlessly fusing funky hard hitting disco drums with Cumbia rhythms and a touch of Batacuda, the track delivers the atmosphere of the street party with a distinctly traditional vibe. A captivating bass groove, catchy vocal hooks, attention grabbing horns and the underlying sound of the carnival spirit make this a well rounded fusion of traditional and modern Latin styles.

Side B – RITMOS COLOMBIANOS
Neatly complimenting its A Side counterpart, ‘Ritmos Colombianos’ takes a similar Cumbia backdrop and applies it to a loose drum heavy mid-tempo B-Boy rhythm that is no less effective on the dancefloor. Again utilising the bass groove as its driving force, carnival whistles, funky brush drums and horn stabs all make an appearance in the mix. A regular appearance in Chris’s DJ sets for the last year, this track has tried and tested dancefloor credentials.

Disco Cumbia is set on to appear on a forthcoming mixed compilation of modern Latin cuts which Chris is currently working on for the BBE label.

Chris, a collector of hip hop, funk, soul boogie and related beats and jazz based music since the late eighties first came to prominence as a club DJ through his 10 year role as resident DJ and promoter at Substance in Birmingham (one of the UK’s largest and longest running hip hop and funk nights) and a 2 year spell as mix DJ on BBC Radio 1Xtra. During recent years a steady output of high profile mix albums has allowed Chris to DJ around the globe. Chris has also played a few times at Breakin Bread parties so he knows the vibe and is a perfect addition to the Breakin Bread roster.

In the past year Chris has joined the ranks of the BBE label putting together mixed compilations for the both the label’s 15th Anniversary and the 10th Anniversary of their acclaimed Beat Generation series. Chris is also hard at work in the studio producing a new album for BBC New Urban Music Award winning band ‘Maylight’, a seven piece outfit fusing jazz, soul and electronics featuring the vocal talents of Tru Thoughts’ Lizzy Parks.

This month’s Droppin’ Science party welcomes back Kiss100′s DJ Swerve.

Currently up for 2 UMA awards for Best DJ & Best Radio, we look forward to him coming to rock the floor for a second time.

As always, myself, Matman and Daredevil will be along too.

In support of his new album, This Time, Lack Of Afro has put together this sharp blend of his own tracks – including brand new cuts from the new album – plus some choice influences and selections.

This Time is out via Freestyle Records on Monday 26 September, and the lead single, A Time For… (featuring Wayne Gidden) is out right now. You can check out the hilarious video in my previous post here.

This year, as well as collaborating on an album project with Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds, having also produced and played on the album, Colours, by Freestyle label mate Frootful, Adam (LOA) somehow found time to create what is rumoured to be his strongest album yet.

Killer soul number taken from Lack Of Afro’s forthcoming LP due out in September 2011 on Freestyle Records. Rumoured to be his best album yet, I’m really excited for this one.
